چکیده

Vibration-based methods of non-destructive damage detection utilizing curvature or strain energy mode shapes have been applied in a variety of applications. Attractive features of these methods include high sensitivity to damage and instant determination of the damage location. However, the quality of damage detection achieved in practice depends upon determining a proper sampling interval for discretization of the displacement mode shapes. Experimental observations show that both undersampling and oversampling of the displacement mode shapes may have adverse effects on the quality of damage detection. This paper presents an analysis aimed at determining the optimal sampling interval that would minimize the effects of measurement noise and truncation errors on the calculation of the curvature and strain energy mode shapes, thus maximizing sensitivity to damage and accuracy of damage localization. Derivation of the formulas for the optimal sampling interval is based on the most commonly used numerical methods for the computation of the curvature and the strain energy mode shapes. Numerical verification has shown very good performance of the suggested formulas in predicting the optimal sampling interval. r 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Damage Detection and Identification in Structures by Spa- tial Wavelet Based Approach

The objective of current work is to show the effectiveness of using wavelet transform for detection and localization of small damages. The spatial data used here are the mode shapes and strain energy data of the damaged plate. Because the wavelet coefficients are performed with various scale indices, local perturbations in the mode shapes and strain energy data can be found in the finer scale t...

Damage Detection of Bridge by Rayleigh-Ritz Method

As a result of environmental and accidental actions, damage occurs in structures. The early detection of any defect can be achieved by regular inspection and condition assessment. In this way, the safety and reliability of structures can be increased. This paper is devoted to propose a new and effective method for detecting, locating, and quantifying beam-like structures. This method is based o...

Bridge Condition Evaluation by In Situ Dynamic Data

The performance of vibration-based damage identification techniques for current condition evaluation of existing bridges is studied through their application to dynamic response of an existing concrete bridge. First, in situ dynamic tests were performed and modal parameters (mode shapes and frequencies) were identified. As previous sets of in situ dynamic parameters were not available, the refe...
